A dark, wooden rectangular table is set with glasses, napkins, and a small square plate. The edge of the table is much darker than the wood of the table’s surface. A black leather folder, possibly containing a bill, rests on the corner of the table; it is slightly opened, as if a pen rests inside it. The glasses are smudged with fingerprints and lip-marks, and one glass is half-full of water. Sunlight falls in irregular patterns on the table, illuminating a napkin and small salt and pepper shakers.

Two beige chairs are pushed up against the far side of the table. Above the table, a chandelier glitters. It consists of four separate light fixtures hanging from a single crossbar; each fixture is brightly lit and surrounded by crystal spheres on strings.

The walls of the room are painted a neutral, cream color. Three wood-framed windows open to the outside behind the table, situated at slight angles to each other, as if once part of a single bay window. Bright sunlight shining through the windows makes them appear cloudy; even evergreen wreaths hung in the windows appear blurry and out of focus. The outside branches of the dark green wreaths are illuminated, while the insides, flush against the glass of the window, are in shadow. The reflections of several chandelier bulbs appear in the window, at the level of the wreaths.

Outside the windows, the corner of a white picket fence is dimly visible. It seems to enclose a green lawn with a tall tree. Through another window there is a white pillar, perhaps holding up a porch.

Movie Review: “Crazy Heart”

January 28th, 2010

“Crazy Heart” stars Jeff Bridges as a washed-up country singer who falls in love with a journalist, played by Maggie Gyllenhaal. Bridges’ excellent performance redeems a screenplay full of beer-and-guitar cliches. Three stars.
